We greatly value our strategic relationship with the UK Department for International Development.

VSO is the world’s leading independent, international development charity that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General of the United Nations, says "VSO is a model part of what we have come to know as civil society."

EducationInternational Education Week,
17 – 21st November 2008

It’s International Education Week and all over the world, teachers and students are celebrating the benefits of bringing an international perspective into the classroom.

VSO plays a big part in this. Volunteer teachers returning to UK schools draw on their experiences overseas to bring Africa and Asia to life for their students, as one primary teacher describes here:

'I do a project on Uganda every year, managing to fit it into the curriculum through Art or Geography. Pupils love it. We also do African music: I knew I’d find a use for those drums!'

The world’s largest archipelagic state, Indonesia is made up of an incredible 17,508 islands of which just 6000 are inhabited. VSO volunteers are based in the regions of Java and East Nusa Tenggara, and many are working with health authorities, hospitals and community-based organisations to dramatically improve standards of healthcare.
