Data protection

Our website > Privacy statement

We hope that the VSO website provides helpful information about volunteering with VSO, about our programmes and work worldwide and our ongoing campaigns to tackle disadvantage. We would like you to know that VSO is committed to safeguarding your privacy online.

The following policy statement explains how your personal information will be treated when you access the VSO website. The policy may change, so please check this page periodically.

What data is being collected and how does VSO use this information?

VSO does not capture or store personally-identifying information (such as your e-mail address, name, title, or postal address) without your knowledge when you visit our site. You are always able to choose to provide such information to us.

Cookies
We use a product called Sitestat to assess which areas of our site are most popular. This helps us understand how our site is being used so we can make it more useful to visitors. Sitestat uses cookies (text files that identify your computer to our server) and IP addresses (the domain from which you access the internet) to indicate which pages have been accessed when. This information is collected automatically. It is not linked to any personal data, so browsing is anonymous.

Our returned volunteer alumni facility, RVs Connected, also uses session cookies to keep you logged in to the system. These are automatically deleted after every session and do not contain any personally-identifying information. If you choose to tick the 'remember details' box on the login form, RVs Connected will save a cookie to your hard drive containing your login e-mail address and password. Next time you visit RVs Connected the system will pick up this information and allow you to log in with a single click.

Personally-identifying information can only be collected on our website if you choose to provide it. This information may be in the form of, for example, online application forms, online subscriptions, membership and order forms, joining electronic mailing lists, or sending us an e-mail. Some of these may also include optional survey information.

The information you supply will be used for the purpose specifically designated (for example, responding to your request for information, processing your orders and applications, etc) and in accordance with VSO's data protection policy and the UK Data Protection Act 1998.

We may use your details to contact you with current and future information about our work, events, campaigns and activities, or any other features of VSO described on the website. However, you will always have the opportunity to opt out of receiving further information; see the "Opt-out" section below.

For full details of VSO's data protection policy, please read our Data Protection Policy Statement, or contact The Data Protection Officer.

Who is collecting your information?

When you are on the VSO website and are required to submit personal information, you are sharing that information with VSO alone, unless otherwise stated.

With whom does VSO share your information?

Except as may be required by law, VSO does not pass your personal data to outside organisations and/or individuals without your express consent. Our supporters are often happy to hear from like-minded organisations with which VSO occasionally shares or exchanges data, but you will always have the chance to opt out. VSO will ensure any data that is used in this way cannot be transferred without VSO's consent.

Opt out or change your personally-identifiable information

VSO's website gives users the opportunity to opt out of receiving more communications from us at the point where we request information from you. This is usually done with a tick box.

You are entitled to know about the personal information VSO holds about you and you also have the right to have your data updated, corrected or deleted. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date information about our supporters is important to VSO. Please address all your requests and/or queries about our Data Protection Policy to The Data Protection Officer (address below), or read VSO's Data Protection Policy Statement.

Security

The security of your credit card details is of the utmost importance to VSO. We want you to have peace of mind when supplying this information to us. VSO uses a high-level secure server supplied by Thawte to store your credit card details to ensure that your information stays private and confidential.

VSO's website has links to other sites which may contain information that is useful and of interest to our readers. This privacy statement only covers the VSO website. VSO is not responsible for the content, views or accuracy of information on external internet sites.
